Purpose. What a beautiful word that is! Purpose is why you do what you do. It is the reason behind your actions. Purpose gives meaning to everything and makes life more fulfilling. Just this definition should be enough to realise that purpose is a fundamental part of life and a must-have. However, people spend years of their life not having known their purpose. What about you? Do you know your purpose?
That’s not an easy question though, it’s one that many fumble to answer and that brings us to the next question.
How do I know whether or not I have found my purpose?
Let’s explore this further.
1) Do you lack motivation or energy? (And there are no physical reasons for it)
2) Do you struggle to reach your goals?
3) Do your goals keep changing?
4) Do you lack happiness even when you reach your goal?
5) Are you still searching for something better?
If you have answered yes to any of the questions above, chances are that you haven’t found your purpose… yet. However, the good news is that there is no right age to find it. Whenever you decide is the right time.
How do I find my purpose?
1) What do you love doing?
2) What comes to you naturally?
If you answer these two questions, you will be closer to finding your purpose. The other way is to pay attention to your state of flow. Flow or the ‘zone’, is when you get fully immersed in a task and feel energised focus, so much so, that you forget about your surroundings. So, when was the last time you were so immersed in doing something that you forgot to eat or sleep? What were you doing at that time? How did you feel? Purpose is closely linked to this state of flow and another way of finding your purpose or passion.
Tip: When you are searching for your purpose, focus on emotions. Your feelings are the best guide to finding a purpose. The deep contentment, the pure joy, the fulfilment: those are the places where purpose is born. You may miss these moments if you don’t spend time reflecting on it. So, be mindful of your emotions. They are your guide.
What’s your purpose?
I recently asked this question at the Story of Me Workshop in Mumbai and the answers I got were the answers I get here in Singapore or anywhere else. There’s something universal about this answer. Purpose, I realise is often linked to people.
If I were to summarise, it would be to align your goal to a purpose and link it to people and to emotions. And when you manage to do that, your life will be warm and beautiful.
